5 Best Weekend Getaways Near Amarillo

Texas is full of incredible places that are worth a visit. If you’ve got a free weekend coming up and you’d like to explore some of the beauty of the state, consider heading out to one of the following weekend getaway spots near Amarillo. waterfall

1. Hamilton Pool Preserve

If you want to feel like you’ve escaped to an entirely different place, take Interstate 27 South to Travis County and go for a dip in Hamilton Pool Preserve. This grotto formed thousands of years ago when the dome above an underground river collapsed. Today the green waters and 50-foot waterfall offer a cooling retreat on those hot Texas days. However, keep in mind that the parking lot only has space for 75 cars, and once it’s full a waiting line will form with wait times around 45 minutes.

2. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Take I-27 South and head toward Fredericksburg to find Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Here an immense pink granite dome rises 425 feet above the countryside. While you’re hiking to the top of the dome, be sure to take some time to enjoy the wildlife around you. Once you’re at the top, take in the impressive views while enjoying a picnic. The nearest town, Fredericksburg, offers a quiet and relaxing getaway with bed-and-breakfasts, antique shops, and wineries.

3. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

For a weekend getaway a little closer to home, take I-27 South and TX-217 East to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Just 50 minutes away from Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon is second only to the Grand Canyon in size. However, the beauty and color of this canyon make it a must-see destination. You can see the canyon by foot, horseback, mountain bike, or car. If you feel like roughing it, the state park has campsites and cabins. If you’d rather enjoy modern amenities during your getaway, the nearby town of Canyon has plenty of accommodations.

4. Marfa

For something a bit more unusual, take I-27 South and U.S. Route 67 South to the town of Marfa. During the day you can explore the eclectic art scene and try restaurants ranging from food trucks to fine dining. However, Marfa really gets interesting at night. This is when you have a chance to spot the mysterious Marfa lights. People have seen glowing and twinkling orbs here since around 1883.

5. Colorado Bend State Park

About six hours away from Amarillo by way of I-27 South, you’ll find Colorado Bend State Park. While the park is an excellent place for hiking, mountain biking, camping, swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, and caving, the real draw is Gorman Falls. The 2.6-mile Gorman Falls Trail takes you to the 65-foot ethereal waterfall in the heart of the park. If you still feel like more exploring after you’ve seen the waterfall, consider a wild cave tour. Here, experienced guides help you climb, slide, and crawl through the beautiful caves under the park.

When you want a weekend getaway that’s uniquely Texas, make sure you take some time to enjoy these trips outside of Amarillo.
