82 Year Old Veteran Ray Murphy Fire Victim Benefit, USA, Amarillo, Texas
Around Thanksgiving, a house in our neighborhood (Ridgecrest) caught on fire and was badly damaged. Fortunately the owner, an 82 year old veteran named Ray, was at the store during the fire. His house was very damaged and he lost most of his stuff, but thankfully there was no structural damage. His house is all he has – with no home owner’s insurance.
Fast forward to January – somebody asked the question in our neighborhood fbook group “How’s Ray?” Through the discussion it became heartbreakingly clear that he was still living there amongst the mess, with no power/heat in the dead of winter. A neighbor had run a cord to his house so he could have power. Many in the group were moved with compassion and resolve at the thought of a neighbor living in such disrepair.
Ray’s niece and neighbors of 37 years have been in contact with the Veteran’s Administration and a number of other sources seeking financial help. At this point Ray qualifies for no assistance even though he only receives $750.00 from Social Security monthly as his only source of income.
This Saturday will mark the 3rd week of our neighborhood, our community coming together for someone else. Volunteers have started the restoration process…removed damaged carpet, drywall, furniture. Electrical is being rewired for a basic cost with donated materials. Much of the work and materials has been selflessly given by others. We are not done yet – there is much to be done still. HVAC, exterior walls/windows, drywall, flooring, etc still remain. For Ray’s house to become a home again, help is needed, because materials are still needed and the things that come next are costly.
This is a call. A call to love your neighbor. A call to put love into action. Please help spread the word.
A benefit account has been set up at

Here is the updated that was given today:
UPDATE on Ray: Wanted to share some incredible news ASAP. The Texas Panhandle Builders Association heard of the need via FB and is taking the entire project over. There are multiple members of the Association that have come together to get city permits taken care of, windows, new roof, HVAC, framing, new cabinets etc ALL donated!!! Wow, what a great organization of giving individuals and what a BIG God to put all of this together!!! I’m in awe. Thank you SO much for all who have done so much this far, made donations and who are praying. The Association hopaes to have Ray’s home complete in the next 30-45 days. Donations are still needed to help complete the project and take care of expenses during the project. They are praying enough will be left over to pay his bills for a while
