Jack Shull

Persistent, passionate and genuine.  These are just a few words used by Volunteer Supervisor Charlene to describe Jack.  After completing his initial training in September, 2017, Jack accepted a case involving a 12 year old boy.  This young man had been in and out of foster care since he was 5 years old, had been adopted, then returned to the State’s custody.  At the time of their initial meeting, the boy was living in a residential treatment center.

After so many moves and disappointments, the young man had become jaded.  He would not allow himself to display any emotion or verbally respond with more than a syllable or two.  Sadly, he had learned that caring and openness only bring heartbreak.

Jack took the time to go over the entire case file to better understand the boy’s position.  Jack never pushed, but rather consistently kept  his visitation promises.  After a few months, the visits were no longer one-sided, as the boy began to build trust in Jack.  The boy also began to feel there was a reason to try harder in school; he wanted Jack to be proud of him.  This boy, who previously refused to meet anyone’s eye or speak more than one word at a time, now couldn’t wait to share the news with Jack that he had made the A/B honor roll.

As Jack continues to act as a male role model for this young man, he is also diligently pursuing a permanent adoptive placement.

Thank you, Jack, for giving this young man hope for the future!
